Seguin Squirrel Trail
Art is a great way to get to know a city in a profound sense, but in the case of the Seguin Squirrel Trail, it’s also a great way to get to know a city in a literal sense. Strategically located around the city at points of interest, you’ll find large squirrel statues that each have a unique paintjob to match its location. By following this trail of photogenic squirrels, you’ll get a perfect tour through the city of Seguin.
Palace Theatre
Built in the late forties, the Palace Theatre has long been an institution of Seguin culture. Within its art deco walls, you can not only watch classic film screenings, but see them in actual 35mm and 16mm formats—a rarity these days and a huge value for film buffs.
Another aspect of the Palace Theatre is the Seguin Cine Museum, which houses a collection of classic film prints, cameras, and all sorts of cinematic memorabilia. You’ll have to wait for an event at the theatre for the museum to open, but appointments can be made outside of event times.
The Texas Theatre
The Palace Theatre isn’t the only vintage theatre in Seguin. Not to be outdone is the Texas Theatre, which predates the Palace by a decade. With a bit more of an old-Texas design, the Texas Theatre was the go-to spot for Westerns from the ‘30s until the ‘60s. The images of Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, and John Wayne spurred imaginations for decades.
These days, the theatre is used for private events, film programs, and live performances. You’ll be pleased to know that the Texas Theatre is being gradually restored, so its future is looking just as bright as its past.
The Heritage Museum
Just three dollars will get you a ticket to the Heritage Museum in Seguin, TX. Built in the 19th century, the museum’s building itself is a part of history. At one point, it was a grocery store with an opera house on the second floor. See a show, then pick up some eggs and milk on your way home.
Fast-forward to the present and the Heritage Museum houses artifacts relevant to the local history of Seguin. This includes relics from Native Americans, early settlers, and even fossils from millions of years ago. Wild West artifacts from Mexican citizens, Texas Rangers, and famous outlaws are on display, as well. This includes an actual gun owned by John Wesley Hardin, one of the most notorious gunfighters in American history.
Pecan Fest
Every year in October, Seguin puts on the aptly named Pecan Fest. This weekend-long event includes the Fall Trade Days outdoor market, live music, hayrides, a petting zoo, and showcases the artistic talents of the community.
Of course, the event also includes plenty of pecans. Eat pecans, buy pecans to eat later, or compete in pecan-centric contests that may or may not involve eating pecans. And you can’t bring up Seguin and Pecan Fest without mentioning that the city is home to the world’s largest pecan, which is 16-feet wide and 8-feet tall. No, you can’t eat that one.
Art & Wine Walk
Most of us can walk and chew gum at the same time, but can you walk, drink wine, and admire art at the same time? Give it a shot at the Art & Wine Walk in Seguin, TX. This festival is a celebration of local artists and local businesses, with all proceeds going to the Seguin Commission on the Arts.
The titular walk will take you to a number of local businesses and artisans, where you’ll have the chance to view and purchase creations from Seguin’s most imaginative citizens. Wine tastings are included on the walk, as is music, art shows, and more.
